The Story Behind MG Jewellery

Maggy Gould, a jewellery designer based in North London, UK, is the proprietor of online jewellery store MG Jewellery.  She designs and makes all the jewellery for her shop.

How it all started
Maggy has always had a creative streak, and four years ago finally decided to do something about it. Jewellery-making began as a hobby. Learning from books and magazines, and occasionally the Internet, Maggy practised and honed her craft. Many hours were spent twisting wire, untangling thread and peering at tiny beads. Many injuries were overcome - needles in thumbs, superglued fingers, eye strain. Once the basics were conquered, Maggy began working on designs. And that was when the fun really started.

Finding inspiration
Maggy says: "I am inspired by everything I see - colours, shapes, nature. A tiny detail on a building can get me thinking, or a mosaic on a floor. In particular, I am fascinated by the native artwork I've seen on my travels, like those from Canada, New Zealand and Spain.
"I love colour - I find it uplifting - which is why I use it so much in my jewellery. I also love using semi-precious stones, like Lapis Lazuli and Amethyst, which have been used for hundreds of years for their healing properties.
"However, my speciality is handsewn beadwork using tiny seed beads - and I have to admit I find this jewellery-making technique the most rewarding. The intricate designs in beadwork mean that these necklaces, bracelets and earrings can take hours - the longest I've spent on one piece is 10 hours!"

MG Jewellery now
Maggy is constantly working on new designs and adding new products to her online shop. As well as selling online, Maggy exhibits at craft fairs in London and Hertfordshire.

And finally, a note from Maggy on looking after your jewellery
"As all of my jewellery is handmade, it needs a certain amount of care. Perfume, chemicals and water can all tarnish beads. Please store your jewellery dry and untangled to protect it. You may use the gift box provided for storage, but please remove the cotton filling and insert a small plastic bag or bubble wrap instead. Finally, to avoid metal beads, clasps and ear wires tarnishing, I recommend gently wiping them with a jewellery cleaning cloth (available from department stores) every so often. I hope you enjoy your jewellery!"

Best wishes,
Maggy Gould
